indonesian arm chairs
Kim and Ian commissioned us to revamp a pair of arm chairs they bought in Jakarta some years ago. Once we had removed the strips of tyres originally used for webbing (!), we went to work on rebuilding the seats and finished them with a combo of Earth Lime and Bibury Lichen wools from Moon Fabrics. They mix styles including Art Nouveau and Gothic and with Kim’s choice of fabric, produce a truly unique result. We also revitalised Ian’s chair in the same Earth Lime wool which now sits pride of place in his home office.
“It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking at previous upholstery work from the purists point of view. Some might view using tyre strips as questionable, but as we did in the UK post WW I & II, we use what materials are available which can often result in re-use and therefore a more responsible approach. And it’s got us thinking of what other by-products or used materials we can perhaps bring to the upholstery trade in the future.”
